Rudolf Němec was a Czech painter, graphic designer, sculptor and poet, a representative of the “New figuration”. He graduated from the Academy of Applied Arts in Prague in 1961. Rudolf Němec was a Czech painter, graphic designer, sculptor and poet, a representative of the “New figuration”. He graduated from the Academy of Applied Arts in Prague in 1961. From 1965 his works began to appear at group exhibitions of young artists, while his first solo exhibition was in 1968 at the Václav Špála Gallery. After the August occupation he lived in France and England, and in 1969 he returned to Czechoslovakia. During Normalization he could only rarely exhibit his work, usually in small galleries outside of Prague. During this period he worked as a monument restorer. There was a retrospective exhibition of Němec’s work in 1993 at the Czech Museum of Art. He was part of the circle of artists connected to the “Křížovnik School of Pure Humour without Jokes” (for example, he organised happenings with Eugen Brikcius). His work focused mainly on human figures. One of Němec’s favourite techniques was the direct imprint of the human body – his own and his friends’ (e.g. the Nestled cycle). In addition to art, Němec was also active in literature as an author of verse and poetry in prose.
