The Archdiocesan Archives in Ljubljana is an institution that preserves church records. It was established in 1911. The first archivist was Franc Pokorn. Its role during the communist period was to preserve the archival records of the Ljubljana (arch)diocese. Its activities were critical to preservation of church records, especially the personal collections of the archbishops. 

Its staff was loyal to the Catholic Church and since the Church was discriminated against and persecuted, they felt a certain reserve toward the regime. The staff was mix of clergy and lay people. They were dedicated to their mission, to preserve the church’s archival records. Their activity is still important after the fall of communism, because they systemized and made the collections available to the public. 

The role of the Archdiocesan Archives was crucial in maintaining collections vitali to the history of the church and its activities in the territory of the Ljubljana Archdiocese as well as providing help to parish archives in the territory of the archdiocese as well as other Slovenian regions.   

Because of its exceptional value to national history, the Archdiocesan Archives in Zagreb is organizationally subordinated to the Department of the Croatian State Archives in Zagreb. It began operating immediately after the Zagreb Diocese was established in 1094. Due to the date of its establishment, it is the oldest archive in the inland part of Croatia. Namely, in 1914, the Zagreb Archdiocese concluded an agreement with the Royal Croatian-Slavonian-Dalmatian Government on the terms of storage of the records in the Royal Territorial Archives for fifty years. The same agreement stipulated that the Metropolitan Library of the Archdiocese of Zagreb would also be deposited at the then Royal University Library. Today, the Croatian State Archives has the Zagreb Archdiocese Department, which consists of two parts: the Archdiocesan Archives and the Metropolitan Library. At the beginning of the 1980s, the archival materials were relocated from the then National Archives of Croatia on Marulić square 21 to the addresses Kaptol 27 and 31, where the Archdiocesan Archives are today, while the Metropolitan Library remained at the same address. Besides  the documentation of the archdiocese, the archives also hold the materials of various associations related to the Zagreb Archdiocese, then of archbishops, auxiliary bishops, deacons, parishes and personal archives of many laypersons.

The oldest document in the archives is Felician's Charter from 1134. Likewise, the archives contain abundant materials on the relationship between the Zagreb Church and the Universal Church, as well as the political, economic and cultural role of the Zagreb Church and its bishops. The most important sort of archival materials were taken by Bishop Maksimilijan Vrhovac at the turn of the 18^th into the 19^th century. Namely, historian and archivist Martin J. Kovačić and his son Josip N. Kovačić divided the archbishop's archives of the time into ten thematic categories, including theory, privileges, tithes, economic writings, court records, ecclesiastical writings, ecclesiastical administration documents, founding documents and expropriation documents. Likewise, both of them also processed the correspondence of Zagreb bishops in the period from 1611 to 1815. The archives have great importance to the history of the Zagreb Archdiocese, but also northern Croatia in general. it is certainly of great importance are The canonical visitations of the Zagreb bishops and the scriptures of Zagreb bishops from the 12^th to 20^th centuries certainly have great importance, as do the writings of archdeacons about political, religious and cultural circumstances in the territory of the Zagreb Archdiocese from 1615 to the most recent times.

Az első ezredforduló táján alapított erdélyi püspökség jelentős szerepet játszott a középkorban. Ennek megfelelően mind a püspökség, mind pedig a káptalan jelentős levéltári anyaggal rendelkezhetett. A hasonló egyházi központok, a többi magyarországi érsekség és püspökség levéltári anyaga is óriási károkat szenvedett az évszázadok során. A párhuzamok alapján biztosan feltételezhető, hogy nagyszámú eredeti oklevél halmozódott fel Gyulafehérváron is. A hiteles helyi tevékenység alapján pedig egész Erdélyre vonatkozó hivatali működéssel kapcsolatos iratok, valamint a magánjogi tevékenységre vonatkozó egyéb iratok és családi letétek is összegyűltek. E közjegyzői jellegű tevékenység mellett a káptalan saját birtokaira és működésére vonatkozó iratokat is itt őrizték.

A káptalani levéltár évszázadokon keresztül a gyulafehérvári székesegyház déli tornyának földszinti helyiségében volt. Az 1940-es állapotok szerint a káptalani levéltár három helyen volt elhelyezve: a Batthyaneumban, a káptalani tanácsteremben és a déli torony alatt. A püspöki levéltárat a második világháború után újra rendezték, de olyan egyházi személyek, akik levéltári ismeretekkel nem rendelkeztek. Így összetartozó iratok teljesen külön helyeken voltak találhatók és külső személy számára gyakorlatilag kutathatatlanná vált az iratanyag.             

A romániai rendszerváltást követően a levéltár rendezésének ötletét az 1990-es évek elején Dr. Cicutti Lajos, Rómában élő nyugdíjas jogász vetette fel, amelyhez megnyerte a gyulafehérvári főegyházmegye vezetését és a magyarországi levéltáros szakembereket. 1997-ben kezdeményezték a munka elindítását és egy évvel később sor került az anyag előzetes felmérésére. 1998. október végére elkészítették az első részletes rendezési javaslatot, amely kiterjedt az anyag korszerű elhelyezésére is. A tényleges iratrendezési munka 1999 tavaszán kezdődött el és a Gyulafehérvári Érseki Levéltár ekkor nyitotta meg kapuit a nagyközönség előtt. A rendezés kezdetben lassan haladt, mert az anyag fertőzött részét előbb szakszerűen fertőtleníteni kellett. Erre több lépcsőben 2000 decembere és 2001 áprilisa között került sor a Gyulafehérvári Múzeum papírrestaurátori laboratóriumában. A gyulafehérvári anyag előbb alapszintű, majd többségében középszintű rendezése 2003 elejére befejeződött. Ezen túlmenően, 2002 augusztusában, Kolozsváron, sor került a volt Erdélyi Katolikus Státus levéltári anyagának felmérésére. Az iratanyag rendezéséhez és kutatásához itt is ki kellett alakítani egy megfelelő, korszerűen felszerelt helyiséget, mely a következő év nyarára elkészült.

A Főegyházmegyei Hivatal 2003-ban dr. Jakubinyi György érsek körlevelével levéltári értékmentő programot indított, melynek értelmében a főegyházmegye területén lévő egyházközségek iratanyagait főként magyar állami támogatásból összegyűjtötték és a főesperesi kerületek központjaiban rendszerezték. Ekkortól változott meg a levéltár neve Gyulafehérvári Főegyházmegyei Levéltárra (Archivum Archidioecesanum Albae Juliense). Napjainkig kilenc Gyűjtőlevéltárat sikerült megalapítani a következő városokban: Gyulafehérvár (2003), Szamosújvár (2005), Sepsiszentgyörgy (2005), Marosvásárhely (2005), Gyergyószentmiklós (2007), Székelyudvarhely (2008), Szamosújvár (örmény katolikus 2010), Kolozsvár (2011) és Csíkszereda (2016). Ezekben a levéltárakban az egyházmegyét alkotó plébániák 80 százalékának a levéltári anyagai találhatók rendszerezett, kutatható állapotban.

A Főegyházmegyei Levéltár szerves részét képezi a központi Érseki és Főkáptalani Levéltár mellett, a Hittudományi Főiskola Levéltára Gyulafehérváron – a Papnevelde épületében, melynek anyagaival 2004-ben kezdtek el foglalkozni –, továbbá a már említett Erdélyi Katolikus Státus Levéltára Kolozsváron, mely levéltárak rendezését 2005-ben véglegesítettek. A főegyházmegyei, illetve a státus levéltár rendezésekor, a fond- és állagrendszer kialakításakor kevés példa állt a rendelkezésükre. A hazai katolikus levéltárak rendezése akkoriban még csak kevés helyen jutott odáig, hogy tapasztalataikra támaszkodhattak volna és repertórium jellegű levéltári segédletet még sehol sem jelentettek meg. Nyilvánvaló alapelv volt számukra, hogy helyes lenne igazodni a magyar katolikus egyházi levéltárakban kialakított rendezési elvekhez, de Erdély speciális helyzete miatt ezen elveket nem lehetett maradéktalanul alkalmazni munkájuk során.

A Főegyházmegye területén napjainkig 1800 folyóméter terjedelmű iratállomány került feldolgozásra. Ebből 1000 folyóméter Gyulafehérváron található, és a központi hivatalok irataiból áll, míg 800 folyóméter plébániai eredetű forrásanyag, és mintegy 300 egyházigazgatási egység (főesperesség, plébánia, leányegyházközség) archívumából tevődik össze. A levéltárakban történő kutatást az eddig megjelent öt repertóriumkötet teszi lehetővé, amely az intézményrendszer honlapján elektronikus formában is elérhetőek.

A főegyházmegye gyulafehérvári központi levéltára, a Márton Áron Emlékgyűjteményt is őrző Érseki és Főkáptalani Levéltár, az érseki palota földszintjén hét felújított és szakszerűen felszerelt helyiségben működik. A 200 négyzetméternyi felületen mintegy 1000 iratfolyóméternyi levéltári anyagot őriznek, amely folyamatosan gyarapodik. Itt találhatók a Püspöki Hivatal történeti iratai, az erdélyi püspök tanácsadó testületének, a Főkáptalannak a levéltártöredéke, egyházi iskolai és gazdasági iratok, valamint egyéb értékes gyűjtemények, mint az anyakönyvi másodpéldányok, személyi hagyatékok vagy az oklevéltár. Az iratokat hét fondcsoportban rendezték, melyek a következők: I. Püspöki levéltár II. Káptalani levéltár III. Gazdasági levéltár V. Egyéb szervek iratai VI. Személyi hagyatékok VII. Gyűjtemények.  Az itt hiányzó IV. fondcsoport az Erdélyi Katolikus Státus Levéltára, mely Kolozsváron található.

The Archdiocesan Archives in Split is the central archive of the Split-Makarska Archdiocese. It is the archives of Archbishop’s chancellery office and the other archdiocesan institutions, as well as the archives of individual archbishops and priests, including the personal collection of Archbishop Franić. It also contains the archives of the old abolished dioceses of Trogir and Makarska, as well as the archives of the Split Cathedral District and the Split cathedral itself. Archdiocesan Archives in Split are<s among the oldest archives in the Croatia, since the Split Church is the heir to the ancient Salonitan Diocese of the Roman era. The oldest archival materials date back to the 9^th century, and among the oldest documents are various documents issued by popes and rulers. The archives that were at that time housed in the Archbishop's Chancellery were consumed by a fire at the beginning of the 16^th century, so that most of the medieval materials were destroyed. Until the new archbishop's palace was built at the end of the 17^th century, the historical materials of the Split archives were threatened by the permanent deterioration of the archbishop's headquarters.

During service of Bishop Stjepan Cosmi in the 1680s, the restoration of the historical materials survived a turbulent period in the history of the archives. New problems followed the devastation in Dalmatia by French troops at the beginning of the 19^th century, who occupied the bishop's palace in Split. They treated the old archives very arbitrarily and indiscriminately. However, the reestablishment of the Austrian authorities Dalmatia became an opportunity to find a solution for the Archdiocesan Archives of Split, so in 1833 the first inventory was compiled. At the end of the 19^th century, the entire archival materials were transferred to the building of the new bishop's palace, where the archives would remain until 1971, when they were relocated to their present address in Zrinsko-frankopanska street no. 14. in Split. According to Kovačić, the archives again suffered damage after the communist authorities nationalized the building of the bishop's palace.  Bishop Franić realized that church registers of baptisms and deaths could be fragmented and . After the bishop intervened with the authorities, the conservation department of Split was engaged and the further seizure and looting of the archives was stopped. These archives, with their rich materials, are among the most important archives in southern Croatia. Its importance to the study of the national heritage was also recognized by the Croatian State Archives, which declared these archival materials a cultural good in 2014.
